Mia's Cake

It's not often that I get to make a cake that I also get to cut into. I started working on the pieces of this cake about a week ago. I then spent 2 nights assembling and a morning to add the final touches. All to be cut into pieces and devoured within minutes. What's funny is that others seem to have such a hard time with it when I don't. While I LOVE decorating cakes, the purpose of a cake is for it to be eaten. So for me, the exciting part is to hear people say how yummy the cake is.

This was a chocolate fudge cake with vanilla buttercream. Pay close attention to the final photo with Mia in it, look at her fingers. When I brought it our for her to blow the candle she accidentally put her hand in the grass, I told her to lick her finger, WELL, next think you know she was scooping up the grass and inhaling it! While she liked the cake, her reaction when we sang happy birthday was priceless. Part of that is also captured in the last photo. Everything except for the pillars is edible.

Nail Polish

This one was fun! It's a fudge marble cake Nail Polish Bottle. The top black part is rice krispy treats and the bottom is 3 layers of cake. Hope the birthday girl likes it!

Mia's Birthday

This week is a BIG week in our household. My daughter Mia is turning 2. Her cake has been in the planning stage for months now, so to actually start working on it is really exciting. She's a huge Dora and Diego fan so it was easy to decide to make a Dora and Diego themed cake. I decided to do a 2 layer cake with a treehouse topper. Here are a few sneak peak photos, final photos should be up Saturday or Sunday.

Treehouse not quite finished yet:

Partially assembled Boots. Mia recognized him right away, thank goodness!

Last Night in Singles Shoes

I was asked to do a Sex in the City themed bachelorette cake. It's red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. The recipe made a massive amount of cake and icing. Hopefully the girls will be hungry. Everything you see is edible. All of the 'accessories', like the shoe, hand bag, martini glasses and even the city skyline are made of chocolate modeling cake. Much more tasty than fondant. Hopefully the girls will be pleased.

Sneak Peak...

I thought I'd share a few sneak peak photos. I worked on my chocolate shoe tonight. Not only will this be YUMMY to eat, but it's much easier to work with than I thought it would. The chocolate clay is much more sensitive to heat them what I usually work with (marshmallow fondant) but I do really like it, and it stiffens very quickly. First sneak peak is a pic of a few of the accessories I made for the cake...

The second sneak peak is a sketch I drew for the treehouse that's going on Mia's cake. :) Paul and I are trying to figure out the engineering of it. I think I might have it figured out. I guess we'll wait and see.

Off to bed to get my rest, tomorrow night I'll be putting the cake together. :)

Chocolate shoes...

Did that make your heart skip a beat? I mean what 2 things does every girl love? Chocolate and Shoes! Well that's exactly what I'm working on. I'm doing a bachelerotte cake for Saturday, it's Sex in the city themed. I was just going to use marshmallow fondant for the accessories, but I needed something stronger for the shoe topper. So, I decided to try my hand at making chocolate clay, and am going to use it to create a stiletto. What a perfect topper, a chocolate shoe. I hope to have pics up Saturday morning, so stay tuned.

I’m also working on Mia’s cake. It’s Dora and Diego themed. I’ll be taking pictures as I go along. My plan for this cake is fairly intense. A 2 tiered cake with a waterfall and a tree house, with the whole gang, Dora, Diego, Boots, Benny, the BoBo brothers, maybe even Swiper. I need to get moving on them! I see many late nights in my near future. Can’t wait!!!

Girly Cougar

I was asked to do a Cougar cake. When I was first asked, I secretly hoped I could talk the client out of the idea and sway him to something else. As I began to plan the cake I got really excited. It was going to push me out of my comfort zone for sure, but I LOVE a challenge. I planned this cake for many days and started assembling the small pieces slowly. It ended up including many firsts for me. It was the first time I worked with Rice Krispy treats. (the cougars head and the bottom layer of him are made of rice Krispie treats) It was only my second time covering a cake in fondant. It was my first time making a 'purse' cake. It was the first time I'd tried to carve an animal (at least to this degree). It was a challenge. In the end, I'm very pleased with certain elements and discouraged over others. I learned A LOT and I now know how to tackle similar projects in the future.

Here it is. Many hours of work, in 1 cake.

Now let's hope the birthday girl and client like it!

Flower Power

Cake Sample #2 - Chocolate Fudge surprise with cookies and cream filling and buttercream frosting, fondant flowers. This was a pretty quick cake to do, but I love how it looks. I haven't heard back from the sampler yet, hoping it was ok! I'll keep you posted, if it's going to be added to my gourmet flavor listing.

Anniversary Cake - Cake Sample #1

This is the first of 5 sample cakes. It's a strawberry yogurt cake with whipped cream cheese frosting, covered in marshmallow fondant. It was my first time covering a cake (let alone a tiered cake) with fondant, and my first time making 'ribbon' roses. These are actually made with circles. Samplers were apparently very pleased with it. So it looks like it this flavor will now be a 'regular' on my gourmet list.

Thanks !!!
